Other support

We can also offer support to parents and carers in the following areas:

  • Provide emotional support for those going through dianosis and strategies to help them cope with the demands on them
  • Provide stragies for dealing with autistic behaviour, and help explain the behaviour patterns
  • Signposting to other organisations that can help you find funding to help with care and transport costs, and respite care, or with meetings at school regarding additional help
  • One-to-one support for parents and carers with individual enquiries

Please note that whilst we can inform you of your rights regarding diagnosis, benefits and special educational needs, we are not able to comment on specific cases.  Where advice regarding how to complete forms, and appeal decisions is needed we will put you in touch with other agencies that can provide a higher level of support.

Asian mothers support group

What is it?

Our parent support group is an informal group in which parents and carers can come to meet people in a similar situation and gain information, emotional support and advice from other parents over tea and biscuits. We also invite guest speakers from relevant organisations to give information about services and topics of interest, and invite holistic therapists to give relaxation sessions.

Who is it for?

Parents and carers of children and young people with an autistic spectrum condition from the Asian community.

Where is it?

The Autism Support Centre, 89 Caledonia Street, Bradford, BD5 0EN.

When is it?

Twice a month on a Thursday from 12pm - 2pm.  Please contact Nikki on 01274 721932 to find out the dates and times.

Does my child need a diagnosis for me to attend?

No. Getting a diagnosis can be a difficult time and we offer support to those going through the process of getting a diagnosis as well as to parents and carers who already have a diagnosis for their child.

Is there an interpreter?

Yes.

PLEASE NOTE - The Asian Mothers Support group will only run during term time.

Family / carer support

The groups for families and carers meet at different times in different places.  They include a weekly parents group that meets at the centre and a monthly parents group that meets less formally at a local pub.  There's also a new group for siblings, where they can meet and play with other children that have a brother or sister on the Autistic Spectrum.  More details of these groups can be found using the links to the left.

Does my child need a diagnosis for me to attend?

No. Getting a diagnosis can be a difficult time and we offer support to those going through the process of getting a diagnosis as well as to parents and carers who already have a diagnosis for their child.  Your diagnosis could be for autism, Aspergers, ADHD or a number of other related conditions.  We are here to help all with 'autistic behaviour', not just those who have come out the other end of the process with an 'official label'.
